Dr. Casey Jordan
Dr. Casey Jordan, President of Beacon Preservation, is an attorney and social scientist devoted to lighthouse preservation and environmental conservation. With a diverse background in historical preservation, media relations, and law & society, her passion for lighthouse preservation is the natural evolution of 20+ years of researching and restoring historic properties. As a full professor (J.D., Ph.D.) in the Ancell School of Business at Western Connecticut State University, Casey balances her classroom teaching and scholarly research with law practice, mediation, policy analysis, and grant-writing.
An avid scuba-diver, rock-climber, kayaker, and snowboarder, she enjoys world travel and ecotourism when not managing Beacon’s lighthouses in Maine and Connecticut and serving as the Executive Director of Green Light Academy. In addition to overseeing Beacon’s day-to-day operations, Casey promotes our mission of lighthouse preservation through environmental conservation and marine education programs, while doing her fair share of project planning and hands-on restoration.
Read about Beacon Preservation's President, Casey Jordan, in the March 2009 issue of the "Connecticut Law Tribune" and the December 2007 issue of "Soundings."

Zhya Jacobs: In Memorium
Zhya Jacobs was a founding member of Beacon Preservation, a member of its Board of Directors and the organization’s chief architect and design consultant. A native of India, Zhya received his Bachelor in Architecture from the Academy of Architecture in Mumbai, his Master in Architecture from Georgia Institute of Technology, and his Master in Design Studies from Harvard University Graduate School of Design. He worked on global projects for world-renown firms such as Skidmore Owings & Merrill and Cooper Carry, with a specialization in zero-input sustainable energy design.
Zhya was the voice of reason during lighthouse inspections, and created CAD renderings of Beacon’s prospective lighthouses while determining best use with minimal environmental impact. LEED-certified, his expertise in renewable energy design was a major asset to Beacon’s sustainable energy plans for Goose Rocks and Penfield Reef Light.
In November 2008, Zhya was walking in the fog along the retaining wall of the Michigan River in Chicago when he accidentally slipped and fell into the freezing waters and drowned. He is greatly missed by both his family and friends at Beacon Preservation, but his legacy lives on in the lit beacons of our lighthouses –made possible through his brilliant contribution to our lighthouses’ sustainable energy design.
Beacon has established the Zhya Jacobs Beacon Fund in honor of our lost colleague (please see Save a Lighthouse to contribute in Zhya's name). All donations to the Jacobs Fund will be used to implement Zhya’s sustainable energy plan for Penfield Reef Light, and the restoration of the beacon mechanical room which will be known as “Zhya's Beacon.”
Debashree Karnik
In January 2009, Zhya Jacob's former Harvard classmate and friend, Debashree A. Karnik, became Beacon Preservation's new Chief Architect and Design Consultant. As a full-time architect for Pei Cobb Freed & Partners Architects in Manhattan, Debashree works on integrated township development and has experience in restoration architecture and interior design for a range of international projects including buildings in India and the Dominican Republic. Her research on zero-input cutting-edge technology sustainable energy system design has resulted in recommendations for an updated solar- and wind-energy plan for Penfield Reef Light. Debashree's latest project is an original design plan for window-placed solar-receptors for the Saybrook Breakwater Light in order to ensure minimal interruption of the lighthouse's profile with maximium efficiency and protection of the environment.
